Mountain Alder
Alnus Incana Ssp. Tenuifolia
Overview
The Mountain Alder (Alnus incana ssp. tenuifolia) is a deciduous shrub reaching 10-15 feet in height. Adaptable and versatile, it flourishes along streambanks and moist sites. Its elongated, serrated leaves turn yellow in fall, complementing catkins that provide winter interest. This hardy species' root system stabilizes soil, making it excellent for erosion control and a valuable habitat for wildlife. Prefers full sun to partial shade in zones 2-6.
