Coastal Cholla
Cylindropuntia prolifera
Overview
The Coastal Cholla (Cylindropuntia prolifera) is a native cactus of the southern California and Baja California regions. This perennial shrub reaches a height of 2-4 feet and spreads up to 5 feet wide. It produces greenish-yellow flowers, followed by spine-covered fruit. Preferring sandy soils, it requires minimal water and full sun, making it ideal for xeriscapes. Handle cautiously due to sharp spines. Zone 9-11 hardiness.
