Wild Black Currant

Overview

Ribes americanum, or Wild Black Currant, is a hardy deciduous shrub thriving in USDA zones 4-7. It reaches a mature size of 3-6 feet in height and spread, preferring partial shade. In spring, its pendent racemes of yellowish flowers attract pollinators, followed by edible, glossy black berries in summer. With lobed, green foliage that turns yellow in fall, it adds a four-season appeal to woodland gardens and naturalized areas.
